Established in East Sussex in 1996, Wells Construction Building and Conservation Ltd is a small team of dedicated, highly skilled craftsmen: Mathew Wells and Shaun Thorpe, alongside Paul Gould and Jack Brink.
Having always had a keen interest in carpentry, working on building sites since the age of 14, I started working in commercial construction after graduating from Manchester University with a Bachelor's degree in Law in 1992.
After my legal training, I was drawn back to the building sites as I found it was an outlet for my creativity and this was a passion I was determined to pursue.
During the nineties, I began to build a team of like minded tradesmen capable of new build schemes, extensions, barn conversions and more. This team has evolved throughout the years, but the focus on quality and a love for the craft remains.
We specialise in bespoke house building. We have been honoured to have built several bespoke houses for discerning clients, alongside local independent architects. We are passionate about creating beautiful houses, buildings and furniture. Starting from a blank canvas or derelict building and transforming it into something special is something I feel extremely lucky to be able to do every day.
We are a small team with myself at the heart of it - I am involved in almost every element of a building project. From often having design input, to overseeing site surveys and ground work to using my extensive experience to curate an aesthetic and welcoming space.
Whether it be sourcing the right brick to match a specific mortar or hunting down the perfect stone or oak beams for a space, I will be hands-on and in-charge, utilising my 25 years experience and offering you a service you can rely on. You can rest assured that I will oversee every stage of the project and ensure a high quality build throughout.
One of the most common issues I see on building sites is individual tradesmen being disassociated with the overall project, merely turning up to do their specific task and then moving on. We simply could not do that - at Wells Construction, we find that the connectivity of each of the building phases is what helps the project to run smoothly and our passion for the project comes from being involved from start to finish.
When we need to enlist a specialist for something we cannot do ‘in house’, I hand pick tried and trusted subcontractors who understand the vision and are committed to the project.
